Abstract

This study has two purposes: one is to analyze the difference of the image of nurses between the general public and nursing students; the other to investigate factors which influence the image of nurses.
In order for the first purpose, one hypothesis will be tested in this study: nursing students will have a more positive image of nurses than the general public.
There are 6 hypotheses for the second purpose: (1) people with a religion will have a more positive image of nurses than people without a religion; (2) women will have a more positive image of nurses than men; (3) people with an experience of hospitalization will have a more positive image of nurses than people without that experience ; (4) people who have a nurse in the family or among their relatives will have a more positive image of nurses than people who do not; (5) nursing students with more clinical practices will have a more positive image of nurses than students without these ones ; and (6) application motive of nursing students for entering colleges will make them perceive different images of nurses.
The subjects of this study were 292 students who attended a junior nursing college in Seoul and 243 citizens on the street. They were asked to respond to a questionnaire which includes 46 items made on the basis of literature review. These data were collected from May 1 through August 15, 1995. A reliability analysis was conducted for those 46 items whose Cronbach¢¥s alpha is .88567. Data-analyzing methods used in this study are t-test and Ftest.
The results of this study are as follows;
(1) There is a statistically significant difference of the image of nurses between nursing students and the general public.
(2) Sex and application motive were found to be important factors that influence the image of nurses.
(3) Religion, experience of hospitalization, having a nurse in the family or among relatives, and experience of clinical practice do not affect the image of nurses.
